In baccarat, there are three possible outcomes to a hand: player, banker, and tie. The player and banker hands are each dealt two cards, with the player hand being dealt first. If either the player or banker has a total of eight or nine, this is called a natural and the hand is over. If both hands have a natural, then the higher hand wins. If neither hand has a natural, then a third card is dealt to the hand with the lowest total. The hand totals are calculated by adding the face values of the cards together and dropping the tens digit (if any). For example, a hand of Ace-4 would total 5, while a hand of King-Queen would total 0.
The third card rule is as follows:
If the player hand has a total of 0-5, the player hand draws a third card.
If the player hand has a total of 6-7, the player hand stands.
If the banker hand has a total of 0-2, the banker hand draws a third card.
If the banker hand has a total of 3-7, the banker hand stands.
If the player hand drew a third card, the banker hand now follows the same rules as the player hand to determine if a third card will be drawn. Once both hands have been completed, the hand with the higher total is the winner. In the case of a tie, neither hand wins or loses.
