A blackjack hand must be composed of two cards, and it must be possible to get 21 points with those two cards. For example, an ace and a 10 (a “natural” blackjack) would be a blackjack hand, as would an ace and a 6, since the ace can count as 1 or 11 and the 6 can count as 5 (for a total of 16). A hand composed of an ace and a 2 would not be a blackjack hand, because even if the ace counted as 11 points, the total would be 13, which is not 21.
There are a few other rules that pertain to blackjack hands. If a player is dealt a blackjack hand (an ace and a 10-value card), and the dealer does not also have a blackjack hand, the player is paid 3 to 2 on the bet. If the player does not have a blackjack hand, but the dealer does, the player loses the bet.
If both the player and the dealer have blackjack hands, it is a “push,” and the player keeps his or her bet. If a player’s hand totals more than 21 points, it is a “bust,” and the player loses the bet.
There are a few other rules that can come into play in blackjack, but these are the basics. If you remember that the goal is to get as close to 21 points as possible without going over, and that the ace can be worth 1 or 11 points, you’ll be well on your way to mastering the game.
