What is the difference between Contract Bridge and Duplicate Bridge?
Contract bridge is a trick-taking card game played by four players in two competing partnerships, where partners sit opposite each other around a table.
The basic object of the game is to score points by taking tricks containing valuable cards. The game is played with a standard 52-card deck, and the cards in each suit rank from highest to lowest: ace (A), king (K), queen (Q), jack (J), 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2.
Duplicate bridge is a form of the game in which the same bridge deal (i.e. the specific arrangement of the 52 cards) is played at different tables, and the scores achieved by each partnership are compared against each other.
This form of the game is used in tournament play, where it is important to control for the element of luck that can be present in any given deal.
In duplicate bridge, each table is provided with a duplicate board, on which the specific bridge deal to be played is laid out. The duplicate boards are rotated between the tables so that each table plays the same deal.
Scoring in duplicate bridge is done on a points-per-trick basis, with each trick worth a certain number of points depending on the contract that was bid.
The main difference between contract bridge and duplicate bridge, then, is that in contract bridge the same deal is not played at different tables, while in duplicate bridge the same deal is played at different tables. This makes duplicate bridge the more tournament-friendly version of the game.
